Goalkeepers

Igor Akinfeev

Born: 8th April 1986 (19 years old)

Position: GK

Preferred Foot: Right

Nationality: Russia (6 caps / 0 goals)

Current Club: £3.1m

Transfer Value: £3.1m

Basic Wage: £4k per week

Contract Expires: December 2009

Player Overview

Arguably the definition of wonderkid goalkeepers.

In a rare feat for keepers so young, Akinfeev has already established himself as first-choice keeper for Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow, who also won the UEFA Cup the previous season with Akinfeev between the sticks.

Key Strengths

Akinfeev has very strong attributes, particularly for a teenager. His Goalkeeping attributes are all already strong (except Eccentricity at a much safer low figure). His Mental and Physical stats are also impressive, reinforcing the likelihood that, on FM06, Akinfeev is practically guaranteed to become the best goalkeeper in the world one day!

Growth Potential

Expect Akinfeev to develop substantially over the next few seasons, eventually becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He should see growth in key attributes across Goalkeeping, Mental, and Technical throughout his early 20s, with almost another decade to go until he hits a natural peak.

How Did He Do IRL?

In real life, Akinfeev never left CSKA Moscow and made more than 800 appearances for the Russian club, winning six Premier League titles, eight Russian Cups, and the UEFA Cup in the process.

He also played 111 times for his country, briefly serving as captain before retiring from international football in 2018.

Fransisco Guillermo Ochoa

Born: 13th July 1985 (19 years old)

Position: GK

Preferred Foot: Right Only

Nationality: Mexico (Uncapped)

Current Club: América (MEX)

Transfer Value: £1.2m

Basic Wage: £975 per week

Contract Expires: June 2007

Player Overview

Ochoa continues to play for América as the club’s clear first-choice keeper, winning the Clausura 2005 and Champion’s Cup in the process.

Key Strengths

With noticeable improvements in his Goalkeeping and Mental attributes, and a slight decrease in his transfer value, Ochoa is an even stronger signing this season, compared to FM05.

Growth Potential

You’ll see Ochoa’s already improved attributes increase even more as he develops over the next few seasons. His Physical stats don’t go up quite as much as the other two categories, but he should still see a modest boost.

How Did He Do IRL?

Despite this, FM06 Ochoa is still yet to win the first of his 151 real-life caps for Mexico! Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more.

Kasper Schmeichel

Born: 5th November 1986 (18 years old)

Position: GK

Preferred Foot: Left Only

Nationality: Denmark (Uncapped)

Current Club: Man City

Transfer Value: £625k

Basic Wage: £250 per week

Contract Expires: June 2006

Player Overview

Son of goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel, Kasper is following in his fathers footsteps (and gloves). The elder Schmeichel spent the final year of his career on the blue side of Manchester, which is where young Kasper has also begun his own career.

Key Strengths

Schmeichel begins with a solid base for becoming a top goalkeeper, including a low Eccentricity offering reliability from his young age. But, as third choice keeper behind David James and Nicky Weaver, Schmeichel will need to find minutes elsewhere to develop into his full potential.

Growth Potential

Make the most of Schmeichel being a bargain signing and you won’t regret it. His attributes gain even more than Akinfeev and Ochoa, ideal if you aren’t looking to break the bank or find an immediate new number one.

How Did He Do IRL?

Kasper wasn’t quite as successful as his father but that didn’t stop him becoming a Premier League and FA Cup winner with Leicester, where he spent the majority of his career. The twilight of Kasper’s career has also seen him win a few more trophies with Celtic.

He also firmly established himself as Denmark’s #1 keeper for over a decade, including breaking his own father’s record for minutes without conceding!

Defenders

Sergio Ramos

Born: 30th June 1986 (19 years old)

Position: D RC

Preferred Foot: Right

Nationality: Spain (3 caps / 0 goals)

Current Club: Real Madrid

Transfer Value: £4.8m

Basic Wage: £11.75k per week

Contract Expires: June 2010

Player Overview

A graduate of the same Sevilla academy cohort as Jesús Navas, Sergio Ramos has just signed for giants Real Madrid – the only Spaniard to join Los Galácticos in their original era.

At Sevilla, Ramos had established himself as a first-team player, earning him the move to the Bernabeu for a then-record fee of €27 million.

Key Strengths

Although Ramos has just signed for Real Madrid in-game, his attributes don’t look good enough to be a regular starter for arguably the strongest team in the world. There’s clear promise though, especially considering his high Mental Attributes for a teenage player.

Growth Potential

Ramos only makes modest improvements compared to other wonderkids. But his Mental aptitude increases even further, making him a solid signing and future team leader no matter which club he’s playing for.

How Did He Do IRL?

Moving to arguably the world’s biggest team naturally saw Ramos win many club trophies throughout his career, including 5 La Liga titles and 6 Champions League victories.

Ramos debuted for Spain just before his 19th birthday and would go on to play a key role in his country’s dominance of international competitions between 2008 and 2012.

After a long, successful career with Madrid, Ramos began winding down, first at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won two more league titles, then a brief return to Sevilla before joining Mexican side Monterrey.

Marcelo

Born: 17th May 1988 (17 years old)

Position: D/WB L

Preferred Foot: Left

Nationality: Brazil (Uncapped)

Current Club: Fluminense

Transfer Value: £1.5m

Basic Wage: £375 per week

Contract Expires: September 2009

Player Overview

A product of the Fluminense academy system, Marcelo is just about ready to join the Brazilian side’s first-team.

Key Strengths

At 17, Marcelo’s attributes don’t look amazing and he will certainly need time to develop into his potential.

His high First Touch, Bravery, and Flair, as well as solid Physical attributes for his playing style, serve as a good base. Just don’t expect Marcelo to be winning many aerial duels!

Growth Potential

Marcelo’s attributes can do some wild things in FM06. Overall, he improves significantly, but don’t be surprised to see some unusual fluctuation as some individual attributes rise while others drop. He generally develops into more of an attacking threat than a defensive stalwart, so play into that and he’ll do just fine.

How Did He Do IRL?

Marcelo was snapped up by Real Madrid after just one full season with Fluminense, playing an impressive 16 seasons with the Spanish giants in a trophy-studded career that cemented Marcelo as one of the greatest left backs of all time. At 35, Marcelo returned to Fluminense where he also won the Copa Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana (South America’s continental super cup).

He also made 58 appearances for his country, though only managed to add the 2013 Confederations Cup to his haul.

Rafinha

Born: 7th September 1985 (19 years old)

Position: D/WB/M R

Preferred Foot: Right Only

Nationality: Brazil (15 U21 caps / 3 U21 goals)

Current Club: Schalke

Transfer Value: £3.7m

Basic Wage: £4.2k per week

Contract Expires: June 2009

Player Overview

After strong performances for Brazil U20s in the 2005 Youth World Championship, Rafinha joins Bundesliga side Schalke 04 ahead of the 2005/06 season.

While Rafinha’s attributes and relatively low transfer value might make him look like a tempting signing, his recent move to Schalke may be a roadblock.

Key Strengths

Despite being just 19, Rafinha already almost looks like the complete package. His attributes are strong across the board and only likely to get better. His ability to play in multiple positions on the right hand side and strong ball-playing attributes (namely Crossing, Dribbling, First Touch, Passing, Technique) will make Rafinha a solid attacking threat.

Growth Potential

Rafinha should improve both defensively and as an attacking threat. His Mental attributes also improve substantially, making him a dominant presence on the right wing within a few seasons.

How Did He Do IRL?

After five solid, if unspectacular seasons, Rafinha joined Italian outfit Genoa but returned to Germany just a season later, this time with Bayern Munich. It was here that Rafinha saw most of his career success, winning 7 consecutive Bundesliga titles and earning himself a Champions League medal in 2013.

Leaving Munich in 2019, Rafinha “wound down” his career with several Brazilian clubs, including winning the Copa Libertadores and two league titles with Flamengo, plus a brief spell at Olympiacos – adding the Greek league and cup to his already stacked trophy cabinet.

Rafinha made his senior Brazil debut in 2008 but made just four appearances in total due his competition for selection being Maicon and Dani Alves…

Vincent Kompany

Born: 10th April 1986 (19 years old)

Position: D C

Preferred Foot: Right

Nationality: Belgium (11 caps / 0 goals)

Current Club: Anderlecht

Transfer Value: £1.4m

Basic Wage: £10k per week

Contract Expires: June 2010

Player Overview

Although Anderlecht failed to win any trophies last season, Kompany has established himself as the Belgian player to watch, winning numerous individual honours including the Footballer of the Year award.

This year, Kompany is a natural D C and competent as a DM or D R.

Key Strengths

Such a strong personal season has seen most of Kompany’s attributes significantly increased. Despite this, his value has halved making him more accessible to clubs with lower transfer budgets!

Growth Potential

Kompany isn’t likely to improve much beyond his current ability. But his attributes are already incredibly high, especially considering his transfer value, so it’s absolutely worth snapping him up quickly. If you do, you’ll have a defensive rock and future club captain secured for the long term.

How Did He Do IRL?

Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more on Vincent Kompany.

Curtis Davies

Born: 15th March 1985 (20 years old)

Position: SW, D C

Preferred Foot: Right Only

Nationality: England (Uncapped)

Current Club: West Brom

Transfer Value: £3.2m

Basic Wage: £8k per week

Contract Expires: June 2009

Player Overview

A fresh arrival at West Brom, Curtis Davies joins the Premier League side after an impressive season with Luton Town in League One.

Davies can play as a D C or behind the main defensive line as a Sweeper.

Key Strengths

Davies already has the attributes to become a solid centreback, his Heading, Marking, and Tackling all standing out from otherwise unimpressive Technical attributes. His Mental attributes are also geared up for a no nonsense defender, with all round Physical attributes to support him. Davies’ good Pace should make him excellent at chasing down opposing players.

Growth Potential

Within a few years, there’s a good chance Davies will have improved immensely, becoming a much more well rounded player. That doesn’t mean he won’t also improve in his primary position, he’ll just see more gains in areas that start off weaker. Davies’ Physical attributes might decline a little bit but it’ll barely be noticeable compared to his gains elsewhere.

How Did He Do IRL?

Despite a good personal season, Davies found himself playing Championship football the following year as West Brom were relegated. Their failure to bounce back saw Davies loaned to Aston Villa, followed by a permanent move, but Davies soon found himself out of favour at Villa Park, establishing himself as a go-to defender for teams fighting to remain in or reach the Premier League. He eventually settled at Derby County to wind down his career, spending his final season in football at League One side Cheltenham Town.

Despite playing for England U21s and even making the senior squad a few times, Davies never played for the Three Lions. At age 38, and in his final season, he joined Sierra Leone for three games, even scoring for them in a World Cup qualifier!

Leandro Castán

Born: 5th November 1986 (18 years old)

Position: D C

Preferred Foot: Left Only

Nationality: Brazil (Uncapped)

Current Club: Atlético Mineiro

Transfer Value: £1.8m

Basic Wage: £250 per week

Contract Expires: May 2007

Player Overview

Castán plays for boyhood club Atlético Mineiro in Brazil’s top division.

Key Strengths

A solid if unspectacular looking defender, Castán has surprisingly strong Mental attributes for a teenager. Pair this with his well balanced Physical attributes and key Technical stats like Heading, Marking, and Tackling, and Castán certainly shows promise.

Growth Potential

Another incredible bargain, Castán should develop quickly and become one of the best young central defenders in the world within just a few years. Like Davies, expect Castán to become a more rounded player, balancing playmaking and attacking improvements alongside his defensive strengths.

How Did He Do IRL?

After an unsuccessful season in Sweden, Castán returned to Brazil where he eventually established himself at Corinthians. His performances there earned a move to Serie A’s Roma, and even two caps for his country! After six relatively uneventful seasons in Italy, Castán returned to Brazil where he saw out the rest of his career.

Not the most impressive resume for a wonderkid. Can you help him do better?

Midfielders

Cristiano Ronaldo

Born: 5th February 1985 (20 years old)

Position: AM RL

Preferred Foot: Either

Nationality: Portugal (21 caps / 9 goals)

Current Club: Man Utd

Transfer Value: £15.25m

Basic Wage: £18k per week

Contract Expires: June 2008

Player Overview

Despite improving on his season tally from his first year in England, Ronaldo still has a way to go to reach his peak. However, a rare trophyless season for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd has all eyes on Old Trafford for improvement…

A natural winger on either side, Ronaldo can also be used as an ST or AMC.

Key Strengths

Ronaldo’s attributes haven’t changed much since FM05 but the improvements he has made should directly impact his overall performance as an attacking player. This is reflected in his slightly higher transfer value at the start of the game.

Growth Potential

Much like the previous game edition, Ronaldo continues to improve and quickly becomes one of the best wingers in the world. His Technical and Mental stats improve significantly over the next few seasons, making him a deadly threat on goal and as a supporting player.

How Did He Do IRL?

Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Leo Messi

Born: 24th June 1987 (18 years old)

Position: AM LC

Preferred Foot: Either

Nationality: Argentina (Uncapped)

Current Club: Barcelona

Transfer Value: £5m

Basic Wage: £1.7k per week

Contract Expires: June 2010

Player Overview

Enter Lionel Messi.

Joining Barcelona from Newell’s Old Boys in 2000, Messi has risen through the C and B teams to potentially be ready for first-team action in the 2005/06 season.

Key Strengths

FM06 gives you the unique position to see Messi develop through his entire career. Although his attributes and potential aren’t yet a reflection of his true path, you can still expect Messi’s name to pop up from time to time…

Growth Potential

Although Messi is technically a wonderkid, his in-game potential probably won’t live up to reality. Messi should see modest improvements in his Technical and Mental attributes, though his Physical skills might suffer as he ages. But you’ll never get Messi for such a bargain!

How Did He Do IRL?

Much like Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s real-life career is almost too much to mention – from scoring 50 league goals in a single season to winning four Champions League and twelve league titles at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has done it all.

Messi’s international career was yet to start in 2005. In fact, despite major club success from his first season (the first of his four Champions League victories), Argentina experienced a dry spell until winning back-to-back Copa Américas AND the World Cup in the early 2020s, finally giving Messi his due on an international level.

Will you give him an even more storied career?

Freddy Adu

Born: 2nd June 1986 (16 years old)

Position: AM LC/F C

Preferred Foot: Either

Nationality: United States (Uncapped)

Current Club: D.C. United

Transfer Value: £1.8m

Basic Wage: £5.5k per week

Contract Expires: N/A

Player Overview

Adu has become a key part of the D.C. United set up over the last few seasons and still showing plenty of promise at just 16 years old.

Key Strengths

Compared to last year, Adu is looking more like a winger than a forward. His Dribbling and Work Rate have seen notable improvements but at the cost of several Physical attributes. These should still develop over time, just don’t expect Adu to make an immediate impact at the top level.

Growth Potential

You’re looking at the future best player in the entire FM06 world. Snap up Adu early and make sure he gets enough playing time, because his attribute gains over the next few seasons will most likely be absurd! Seriously, no other player develops like Adu in FM06, you won’t regret signing him…

How Did He Do IRL?

Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more on Freddy Adu.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Born: 7th March 1987 (18 years old)

Position: AM LC

Preferred Foot: Either

Nationality: France (Uncapped)

Current Club: Lyon

Transfer Value: £3.2m

Basic Wage: £8.75k per week

Contract Expires: June 2007

Player Overview

In 2005, Ben Arfa sits on the fringes of Lyon’s dominant early 2000s side, ripe for an opportunity elsewhere and a chance at becoming one of the best players in the world.

Despite his obvious talent, the young Ben Arfa is yet to play even U21 football on an international stage, not reaching that level in real life until 2007. As the son of a former Tunisian international footballer, Ben Arfa has dual nationality, so his FM06 career could go either way.

Key Strengths

Ben Arfa certainly isn’t the finished article yet. His greatest strength lies in his solid Technical stats (including as a set piece taker), with enough in key Mental and Physical stats to support him developing into a world class attacking midfielder.

Growth Potential

Over time, Ben Arfa’s skills will round out and transform him into an elite winger. His Stamina and Strength should both increase considerably alongside important Technical and Mental attributes. Have no doubt that Ben Arfa will become a goalscoring and assisting machine just a few seasons into a save!

How Did He Do IRL?

His involvement in the first team increased over the next few seasons, leading to an impressive four league titles to his name at just 21! Ben Arfa would later spend four seasons with Premier League side Newcastle United, before returning to France, bouncing around Ligue 1, most notably winning the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue with Paris Saint-Germain.

His real-life international career was spotty at best, making a handful of appearances for France every few years.

Fransesc Fabregas

Born: 4th May 1987 (18 years old)

Position: M C

Preferred Foot: Right Only

Nationality: Spain (1 U21 Cap / 1 U21 Goal)

Current Club: Arsenal

Transfer Value: £4.5m

Basic Wage: £25k per week

Contract Expires: June 2011

Player Overview

Fabregas has now stepped up to Arsenal’s first team as reliable injury cover for Patrick Vieira, Edu, and Gilberto Silva.

Key Strengths

His first-team run has seen Cesc’s Technical and Mental attributes considerably boosted from last year’s game. Despite this, his value has gone down, although his basic wage has quintupled to reflect his increased importance at Arsenal.

Growth Potential

It’s unlikely that Fabregas will improve quite as quickly as other wonderkids. Some of his attributes will see minor increases but his biggest improvement is in Influence, a key skill for playmaking midfielders. Consider picking up Fabregas if he finds himself frozen out at Arsenal, you won’t regret it when he starts dictating play.

How Did He Do IRL?

Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more on Francesc Fabregas.

Anderson

Born: 13th April 1988 (17 years old)

Position: AM LC

Preferred Foot: Left Only

Nationality: Brazil (Uncapped)

Current Club: Grêmio (joining Porto on January 1st 2006)

Transfer Value: £1.6m

Basic Wage: £1.3k per week

Contract Expires: April 2007

Player Overview

Brazilian wonderkid Anderson currently plays for Grêmio but starts FM06 with a transfer to Porto already hardcoded. His career so far hasn’t been too significant beyond winning some U17 international accolades.

Key Strengths

Anderson starts the game with solid Technical and Mental attributes, albeit with plenty of room for growth as he develops. For now, his strong Physical attributes help make him a solid choice as a backup option or for lower level teams.

Growth Potential

It only takes a few seasons for Anderson to evolve into an all-round attacking maestro, equally capable of scoring goals and creating opportunities for his teammates. Well placed gains in both Technical and Mental attributes give Anderson a powerful arsenal for creative playmaking!

Don’t be too concerned if Anderson’s Physical stats start to decline over the years, his high starting point and improvements elsewhere more than make up for it.

How Did He Do IRL?

The real Anderson spent just two seasons with Porto before joining several other wonderkids on this list at Manchester United (turns out that Sir Alex Ferguson knew a thing or two about signing decent players!). However, Anderson was rarely more than a squad player at Utd, which was reflected in his lacklustre total of just 8 caps for the senior Brazil team.

An Olympic Bronze medal, two Portuguese league titles, four Premier League titles, the 2007/08 Champions League, and 2008 Club World Cup makes for quite an impressive trophy cabinet for Anderson’s real-life career. But, with no seasons making more than 30 league appearances for his club, it still feels like Anderson’s talents were wasted.

Will you change that on FM06?

Strikers

Wayne Rooney

Born: 24th October 1985 (19 years old)

Position: AM RL/F C

Preferred Foot: Right

Nationality: England (23 goals / 9 goals)

Current Club: Man Utd

Transfer Value: £27m

Basic Wage: £50k per week

Contract Expires: June 2010

Player Overview

In his first season at Old Trafford, Rooney proved he could handle the step up from Everton and continued his strong performances for England, scoring 23 goals across all competitions for club and country.

Key Strengths

Rooney’s attributes haven’t changed much but his Physical stats have taken a slight knock. Improvements in his First Touch, Technique, and Off The Ball attributes should make up for this though. His transfer value and wage also remain similar to FM05, which isn’t too surprising at the top end of the market!

Growth Potential

There’s very little room for Rooney to improve beyond his current abilities. While Rooney might see some minor boosts in relevant attributes, it’s unlikely you’ll notice any major changes. Don’t worry too much though, he’ll continue scoring for fun even longer than in real life.

How Did He Do IRL?

Check out the FM05 Wonderkid Guide for more on Wayne Rooney.

Kerlon

Born: 27th January 1988 (17 years old)

Position: AM/F C

Preferred Foot: Right Only

Nationality: Brazil (Uncapped)

Current Club: Cruzeiro

Transfer Value: £3.3m

Basic Wage: £575 per week

Contract Expires: December 2009

Player Overview

This recently debuted Cruzeiro prodigy made waves at the international youth level using his unusual “seal dribble” technique. His amazing performance helped Brazil win the South American U17 championship earlier in 2005, bagging 8 goals in just 7 games!

Key Strengths

Like most teenage footballers, Kerlon still has plenty of room for improvement. But his exceptionally high Dribbling stat, supported by strong individual attributes including Technique, Work Rate, and Agility, give Kerlon a strong chance of becoming the game’s top striker within a few years.

Growth Potential

Kerlon is a goalscoring machine in FM06. His Technical and Mental attributes quickly rise, drawing the attention of Europe’s top clubs looking to find the answer to their problems. Signing Kerlon early could turn a mid table side into European contenders almost singlehandedly, thanks to his ability to find the net, either by weaving his way towards it or simply blasting the ball into the top corner from distance.

How Did He Do IRL?

Solid performances for Cruzeiro saw him picked up by Inter Milan, but a series of unimpressive loan spells led him to Japan in 2012 before making just a handful of appearances for multiple clubs between 2015 and 2017.

Imagine what could have been if Kerlon had continued performing with the promise he showed so young…

Evandro Roncatto

Born: 24th May 1986 (19 years old)

Position: AM LC/F C

Preferred Foot: Left Only

Nationality: Brazil (Uncapped)

Current Club: Guarani

Transfer Value: £2.3m

Basic Wage: £400 per week

Contract Expires: November 2006

Player Overview

Currently playing for Brazilian side Guarani, Evandro Roncatto has already played for the Brazil U17s and looks set for a promising career.

Key Strengths

He won’t immediately be dominating at the top level of European football, but Evandro’s solid all rounder base provides a fantastic attacking rotation option.

Growth Potential

Like his compatriot Kerlon, Roncatto develops into a goalscorer capable of making a major difference across the entire season. Roncatto’s attribute development is slightly more build up play focused, with more emphasis on his winger capabilities than upfront, but his combined goals and assists are a sight to behold.

Don’t be surprised if Roncatto and Kerlon lead Brazil to multiple World Cups in the 2010s…

How Did He Do IRL?

Roncatto would eventually move to Portugal, playing for Belenenses and Paços de Ferreira, before spending the rest of his career bouncing around smaller European leagues.

Unsurprisingly, Roncatto never progressed in his international career in real life. Could that all change with some direction under your management?
