The Best Coach Signings for Every Level on Football Manager 2008

Signing the best available players might seem like the simple answer to winning on Football Manager, but it isn’t the only factor. The quality of your coaching team could become the difference maker in a tight relegation battle or fight to reach Europe or the playoffs. Take some time to evaluate your existing coaches and decide whether replacing them might help give your team a competitive edge over league rivals.

The Fitness Coaches for Every Level on Football Manager 2008

3 Best Fitness Coaches for Elite Teams

Jon Dalzell

Current Club: Portsmouth
Wage Demand: £3k per week
Compensation Fee: £75k

Young, incredibly talented, and surprisingly cheap. If you don’t already have world-class fitness coaches covering Strength and Aerobic training, you won’t find a better first coach signing than Dalzell.

João Aroso

Current Club: Sporting CP
Wage Demand: £2.9k per week
Compensation Fee: £330k

Aroso offers another top choice for long-term coverage of your team’s fitness coaching. Consider signing him if Dalzell isn’t available or you need upgrades across both fitness training categories.

Alberto Roca

Current Club: Barcelona
Wage Demand: £6.75k per week
Compensation Fee: £1m

Roca is much more expensive but still a high quality signing for teams that can afford him. Keep Roca in mind if Dalzell and/or Aroso have already been snapped up by another club.

3 Best Fitness Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Jon Dalzell

Current Club: Portsmouth
Wage Demand: £3k per week
Compensation Fee: £75k

Dalzell isn’t just available to teams competing in Europe, just make sure to act quickly before he gets snapped up by a bigger team.

Jimmy Petruzzi

Current Club: Bury / Ivory Coast
Wage Demand: £325 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Although Petruzzi isn’t on the same level as Dalzell, you’re unlikely to face as much competition for his signature, and he’s cheap to boot. At just 31 years old, Petruzzi will help your team establish physical dominance in the league for many years to come.

Donogh Holohan

Current Club: Colchester Utd
Wage Demand: £450 per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Holohan is slightly more expensive than Petruzzi but still provides a solid boost to your fitness coaching. Consider bringing him in if neither Dalzell or Petruzzi are available.

3 Best Fitness Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Donogh Holohan

Current Club: Colchester Utd
Wage Demand: £450 per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Holohan is a strong Fitness Coach for Championship-level teams. He also has high Working With Youngsters and Tactical attributes, so consider employing him as a general coach to take advantage of his wider abilities.

Jimmy Petruzz

Current Club: Bury / Ivory Coast
Wage Demand: £300 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Another good option, especially if Holohan’s upfront costs are off putting or you’re only looking for fitness coaching. Petruzzi is just 31 years old and begins the game as part of the Ivory Coast’s coaching team.

Ed Baranowski

Current Club: Huddersfield Town
Wage Demand: £240 per week
Compensation Fee: £40k

The Fitness Coach of choice for Championship teams on a shoestring budget.

3 Best Fitness Coaches for Lower League Teams

Jimmy Petruzzi

Current Club: Bury / Ivory Coast
Wage Demand: £300 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Far and away the strongest Fitness Coach available to teams in League One and League Two. His young age (31) means Petruzzi can fill the role long-term as you look to progress through the leagues.

Dave Barron

Current Club: Port Vale
Wage Demand: £375 per week
Compensation Fee: £20k

At 29 years old, Barron is even younger than Petruzzi and comes with one-third of the upfront compensation cost.

Ben Cooper

Current Club: Stockport County
Wage Demand: £325 per week
Compensation Fee: £50k

Another decent long term option, at least until you reach the Championship and start attracting higher quality coaches. If you hire Cooper as a regular coach, he can also cover Tactical training.

3 Best Tactical Coaches for Elite Teams

Jose Maria Amorrortu

Current Club: Atlético Madrid
Wage Demand: £7k per week
Compensation Fee: £575k

Amorrortu is the best available Tactical Coach money can buy. Sign him as a general coach to take advantage of his high Working With Youngsters attribute.

Stefano Eranio

Current Club: AC Milan
Wage Demand: £12.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £1m

A significantly more expensive alternative to Renet. Only consider Eranio if Renet has already been snapped up by another club.

Michele Basile

Current Club: Palermo
Wage Demand: £9k per week
Compensation Fee: £750k

Consider signing Basile if you’re looking for an elite tactician to help develop your academy players. His 20 in Working With Youngsters makes Basile a great signing if you’re willing to spend that much on a youth coach.

3 Best Tactical Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Perry Suckling

Current Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Wage Demand: £3.2k per week
Compensation Fee: £85k

Suckling has great Tactical Coaching attributes but lacks in attacking and defensive to be recommended later. But he also has a good Goalkeeping attribute, if you’re looking for dual-role coaches to keep staff expenditure down.

Tony Ford

Current Club: Hereford Utd
Wage Demand: £275 per week
Compensation Fee: £50k

Ford is the go-to tactical coach for Premier League clubs minding their budget.

Vince Overson

Current Club: Burnley
Wage Demand: £1.8k per week
Compensation Fee: £210k

Only consider Overson if Suckling and Ford aren’t available. He comes with much higher upfront and ongoing costs, despite offering less as a coach than either of them.

3 Best Tactical Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Donogh Holohan

Current Club: Colchester Utd
Wage Demand: £650 per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Sign Holohan as a Coach to make the most of his abilities as a Tactics and/or Fitness Coach.

Mick Docherty

Current Club: Gillingham
Wage Demand: £675 per week
Compensation Fee: £190k

Docherty is a good choice to lead your team’s tactical coaching if Holohan is dedicated to Fitness.

Tony Ford

Current Club: Hereford Utd
Wage Demand: £275 per week
Compensation Fee: £50k

Much like he is for top flight sides, Ford is also an ideal tactical coach for Championship sides on a shoestring budget.

3 Best Tactical Coaches for Lower League Teams

Steve Gritt

Current Club: Charlton Athletic
Wage Demand: £800 per week
Compensation Fee: £95k

Boosted by his high DDM and Working With Youngsters attributes, Gritt offers reliable tactical coaching specialism.

Donogh Holohan

Current Club: Colchester Utd
Wage Demand: £650 per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Holohan is a fairly expensive option for lower league sides, but his ability to cover Tactics and Fitness could make it worth the cost.

Joe Little

Current Club: Millwall
Wage Demand: £250 per week
Compensation Fee: £26k

Give your team’s tactical nous a boost without breaking the bank. Little might not be as talented as Gritt or as versatile as Holohan, but he’s a lot cheaper!

3 Best Attacking Coaches for Elite Teams

Alberto De Rossi

Current Club: Roma
Wage Demand: £10.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £850k

If funds aren’t an issue, sign De Rossi for the best attacking coaching in the game.

Michelangelo Rampulla

Current Club: Juventus
Wage Demand: £7.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £600k

Rampulla isn’t quite on the same level as De Rossi, but he’s also a little bit cheaper.

Marcos Alvarez

Current Club: Sevilla
Wage Demand: £8.5k per week
Compensation Fee: £800k

If you’re looking for a coach to cover Shooting and Ball Control, Alvarez is your man. He’s also the youngest of the three, giving you long-term coverage.

3 Best Attacking Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Paul McGuinness

Current Club: Man Utd
Wage Demand: £7k per week
Compensation Fee: £210k

McGuinness is a good Attacking coach, offering the added benefit of taking his talents away from Man Utd.

Alan Irvine

Current Club: Everton
Wage Demand: £7.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £625k

Surprisingly, Everton’s assistant manager is happy to take on a coaching role instead. He’s multi-talented but best served as an Attacking coach. He has a similar coaching profile to McGuinness but costs significantly more, so it’s only worth going for if McGuinness isn’t available or you’re looking for a coach to cover Defence and/or Tactical coaching too.

Tony Humes

Current Club: Ipswich Town
Wage Demand: £975 per week
Compensation Fee: £75k

Humes is a budget-friendly coach best suited to Shooting coaching.

3 Best Attacking Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Jon Rudkin

Current Club: Leicester City
Wage Demand: £800 per week
Compensation Fee: £50k

Rudkin is generally the best Attacking coach available to Championship-level sides. Despite his low Motivation attribute, everything else adds up to more than compensate for it. He’s also great Working With Youngsters.

Dave Carolan

Current Club: Norwich City
Wage Demand: £975 per week
Compensation Fee: £80k

If you’ve already missed out on signing Rudkin, consider Carolan as a slightly worse and slightly more expensive alternative.

Tony Humes

Current Club: Ipswich Town
Wage Demand: £975 per week
Compensation Fee: £75k

Once again, Humes offers the best value for Shooting coaching and remains happy talking to teams around this level.

3 Best Attacking Coaches for Lower League Teams

Les Briley

Current Club: Millwall
Wage Demand: £425 per week
Compensation Fee: £40k

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for an Attacking or Shooting coach; Briley is the best at both and one of the most versatile coaches available to lower level teams in general.

Dave Bentley

Current Club: Chesterfield
Wage Demand: £350 per week
Compensation Fee: £20k

Sign Bentley if you’re looking for a coach dedicated to Attacking and want to use Briley elsewhere.

Simon Clark

Current Club: Peterborough Utd
Wage Demand: £275 per week
Compensation Fee: £65k

Clark is like Bentley, just Shooting focused, and similarly frees Briley up to cover other coaching areas.

3 Best Defensive Coaches for Elite Teams

Paco Herrera

Current Club: Espanyol
Wage Demand: £5.75k per week
Compensation Fee: £325k

The most talented Defensive coaching specialist is also the cheapest. Herrera is the best choice if you’re looking for dedicated coaches to focus on each training category.

José María Amorrortu

Current Club: Atlético Madrid
Wage Demand: £7k per week
Compensation Fee: £575k

Sign Amorrortu if Herrera isn’t available or you’re also looking to cover Tactical coaching.

Rosario Pergolizzi

Current Club: Palermo
Wage Demand: £8.75k per week
Compensation Fee: £725k

Pergolizzi is the more expensive option, but arguably the most versatile, also comfortably filling Attacking and Ball Control coaching roles.

3 Best Defensive Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Tony Adams

Current Club: Portsmouth
Wage Demand: £4.5k per week
Compensation Fee: £130k

Another assistant manager willing to take on less responsibility. The former England and Arsenal captain is also just 40 years old, so you get a long term defensive coach from signing Adams.

Joe Roach

Current Club: Bournemouth
Wage Demand: £550 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Although Roach’s coaching abilities are much lower than Adams, he costs a lot less too. Grab Roach if you’re budget-conscious.

John McDermott

Current Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Wage Demand: £3.5k per week
Compensation Fee: £160k

McDermott isn’t the most cost-effective defensive coach but, at 39 years old, he’s a solid fallback option who should still benefit your team for many years to come.

3 Best Defensive Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Joe Roach

Current Club: Bournemouth
Wage Demand: £550 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Roach becomes the top available defensive coach on the market for Championship-level teams.

Alex Inglethorpe

Current Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Wage Demand: £2.2k per week
Compensation Fee: £130k

Although Inglethorpe might be bordering on too expensive for some second tier sides, his youthfulness and ability to cover Defending and Ball Control could justify his cost.

Joe Little

Current Club: Millwall
Wage Demand: £250 per week
Compensation Fee: £26k

Does your club have a little budget? Then Little is ideal as a young, reasonably skilled, low-cost defensive coach.

3 Best Defensive Coaches for Lower League Teams

Joe Roach

Current Club: Bournemouth
Wage Demand: £575 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Smaller clubs might find Roach a bit too costly for specialising in Defending coaching only. But he’s still the best option for those who can afford him.

Joe Little

Current Club: Millwall
Wage Demand: £250 per week
Compensation Fee: £26k

Little is once again the more budget-friendly option.

Tony Burns

Current Club: Crystal Palace
Wage Demand: £825 per week
Compensation Fee: £26k

Unavailable to lower league sides as a Goalkeeping coach, Burns is still interested in taking on general coaching duties but at a fairly high cost. It’s best to only consider Burns if you’re signing him to cover defending AND goalkeeping.

3 Best Technical Coaches for Elite Teams

Emmanuel Lopez

Current Club: Monaco
Wage Demand: £6.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £650k

Lopez is pretty good at most coaching specialities but is best suited as your Ball Control coach. He’s also just 29 years old, providing long-term coverage.

Giuseppe Carrubba

Current Club: Palermo
Wage Demand: £7.5k per week
Compensation Fee: £775k

Go for the more expensive Carrubba if Lopez is unavailable or you’ve signed him to cover a different training category.

Vincenzo Chiarenza

Current Club: Juventus
Wage Demand: £9k per week
Compensation Fee: £925k

Older and more costly than Lopez and Carrubba, Chiarenza only makes sense to sign if neither of the above are available.

3 Best Technical Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Eamonn Malvey

Current Club: Man Utd
Wage Demand: £4.4k per week
Compensation Fee: £75k

Nab yourself a top quality Technical coach and weaken Man Utd’s coaching strength by signing Malvey away from them.

Steve Gritt

Current Club: Charlton Athletic
Wage Demand: £800 per week
Compensation Fee: £95k

Gritt is the more budget-friendly option due to his ability to cover Attacking and Shooting coaching, and his lower salary requirements (you can afford the slightly higher compensation fee).

Tony McAndrew

Current Club: Aston Villa
Wage Demand: £7.25k per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Due to his high wage demands, it’s only worth considering McAndrew if neither Malvey nor Gritt are available. Although he can also cover Shooting training, you’re better off signing one of the above and saving your money for a Shooting specialist, if one is still available.

3 Best Technical Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Steve Gritt

Current Club: Charlton Athletic
Wage Demand: £800 per week
Compensation Fee: £95k

You can still sign Gritt from Charlton as a Championship side. He’s likely to be the most effective option available but does sit on the high end of cost at this level.

Les Briley

Current Club: Millwall
Wage Demand: £350 per week
Compensation Fee: £40k

Go for Briley if you’re limited by finances or looking for versatile coaches to cover multiple areas. He isn’t quite as good as Gritt but costs less than half the wage expenses and upfront compensation.

Gary Parkinson

Current Club: Blackpool Town
Wage Demand: £425 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Parkinson is another budget-friendly option, though not quite as cheap or talented as Briley.

3 Best Technical Coaches for Lower League Teams

Steve Gritt

Current Club: Charlton Athletic
Wage Demand: £800 per week
Compensation Fee: £95k

Although Gritt will sign for League One and League Two sides, he may well be too expensive to consider as a Technical specialist. However, he’s still a solid choice if you’re looking for one coach to cover multiple training categories.

Jimmy Petruzzi

Current Club: Bury
Wage Demand: £300 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Petruzzi is another catch for clubs looking to double up on coaches. Sign Petruzzi as a coach so he can cover Technical and one of Strength or Aerobic training simultaneously.

Donogh Holohan

Current Club: Colchester Utd
Wage Demand: £650 per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

Holohan doesn’t come cheaply but he’s another option for providing Technical and Fitness training simultaneously.

3 Best Goalkeeping Coaches for Elite Teams

Ángel Férez

Current Club: Cádiz
Wage Demand: £725 per week
Compensation Fee: £110k

Snap up Férez as soon as you can for the best goalkeeping coach money can buy on Football Manager 2008.

Joe Corrigan

Current Club: West Bromwich Albion
Wage Demand: £625 per week
Compensation Fee: £35k

A former England international, Corrigan is the perfect goalkeeping coach addition for Premier League clubs operating within a tight budget. While few teams at this level will be budget-conscious, Corrigan’s relatively low cost offers great value and frees up more money to spend on improvements elsewhere.

Nello Malizia

Current Club: Atalanta
Wage Demand: £3.7k per week
Compensation Fee: £575k

Malizia’s coaching abilities are on par with Corrigan but cost a lot more, both upfront and ongoing. Only consider him if neither Férez nor Corrigan are available.

3 Best Goalkeeping Coaches for Top Flight Teams

Joe Corrigan

Current Club: West Bromwich Albion
Wage Demand: £625 per week
Compensation Fee: £35k

If you’re managing a mid-table Premier League side, Corrigan is probably the best goalkeeping coach you can sign.

David Coles

Current Club: Portsmouth
Wage Demand: £2.4k per week
Compensation Fee: £100k

While Coles isn’t quite as talented or cost-effective as Corrigan, he’s still a solid signing if required.

Vic Bettinelli

Current Club: Fulham
Wage Demand: £1.7k per week
Compensation Fee: £300k

Marcus Bettinelli’s father is surprisingly expensive! Much like Malizia for the biggest Premier League teams, Bettinelli is only worth considering if Corrigan and Coles are unavailable.

3 Best Goalkeeping Coaches for Second Tier Teams

Krzysztof Dowhan

Current Club: Legia Warsaw
Wage Demand: £675 per week
Compensation Fee: £130k

Championship teams can boost their promotion hopes (or relegation battle) best by signing Dowhan. It’s often a tight league where even a goal or two across the season can have a big impact on the final table.

Tony Burns

Current Club: Crystal Palace
Wage Demand: £550 per week
Compensation Fee: £26k

Burns is slightly more affordable and almost as good as Dowhan. Unless you have plenty of cash to spend, he may actually be the more cost effective choice too.

Andy Leaning

Current Club: Sheffield Utd
Wage Demand: £275 per week
Compensation Fee: £40k

Truly cash-strapped sides will need to lean on Leaning to oversee goalkeeping coaching for his lower wages.

3 Best Goalkeeping Coaches for Lower League Teams

Andy Collett

Current Club: Darlington
Wage Demand: £350 per week
Compensation Fee: £40k

Collett is by far the strongest goalkeeping coach available to teams at this level.

Ron Hillyard

Current Club: Ebbsfleet Utd
Wage Demand: £275 per week
Compensation Fee: £60k

Less talented and slightly more expensive upfront, Hillyard is the number two choice at this level.

Paul Priddy

Current Club: Aldershot Town
Wage Demand: £250 per week
Compensation Fee: £65k

Check out Priddy if neither Collett nor Hillyard are available.

What to Look for in Coaches on Football Manager 2008

Three attributes influence the ability of all coaches: Determination + Discipline + Motivating.

Without these averaging at least 10, even a Fitness Coach with a 20 in Fitness won’t be providing the level of training that elite and top flight teams need to help their squad develop physically. Lower level teams can get away with it; just don’t expect the training quality to be as good as it could be. Scale them down alongside the additional attributes outlined below, plus a ticked ‘only show relevant results’ box, until your search returns results.

After this, each training category requires its own combination of strong attributes on top of the base DDM attributes:

Fitness: Fitness
Tactical: Tactical
Attacking: Attacking + Tactical
Defending: Defending + Tactical
Ball Control: Technique + Mental
Set Pieces: Technique + Mental
Shooting: Attacking + Technique
Goalkeeping: Goalkeeping

Pair up coaches with the highest possible average across all the necessary attributes with each training category. Well funded teams will be able to employ a dedicated coach for each training area, but budget constrained teams may have to hire versatile coaches covering multiple areas in order to keep their wages down. Some of the recommended coaches are effective across more than one training category. Keep the attributes that have value across these in mind when making signings to optimise your coaching team for your club’s finances and needs.
